Bread Upma

This is an excellent recipe if you have bread that is going hard. Always use whole wheat bread.


  • 4 slices organic whole wheat bread, crumbled
  • 2 tsp split black gram (urad dal)
  • ½ tsp mustard (rai) seeds
  • ⅛ tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 green chilli, chopped
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium-sized tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tsp grated unpeeled ginger
  • Unrefined salt to taste
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for the garnish


Temper the split black gram, mustard seeds and asafoetida in a pan. Add green chillies, onions and dry fry (without oil). When they begin to brown, add tomatoes and ginger and cook a little. Stir the bread in. Add salt to taste. Turn the heat off and add lime juice, chopped coriander and serve.
