From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...

Holidays are enriching – new places, new people, new experiences, and personal growth. The destination need not be far; it just needs to be different! However, for me, holidays can sometimes be a concern too. Many of my patients maintain healthy habits until a wedding or vacation comes along, and then, sadly, they fall off the wagon.
I completely understand this. Doing something different isn’t always easy. But the world is changing fast, and vegan options are increasingly available. Airports, flights, and restaurants now offer more vegan and healthy food choices than ever before. While it may not always be strictly whole-food, plant-based (WFPB), it’s still a step in the right direction.
As I write this, I am traveling in the U.S. for work and pleasure. It’s been a busy time, but despite that, I remain mindful of my health by eating well, resting adequately, and exercising whenever possible. I was fortunate to stay at my brother’s home in Roseville, where home-cooked meals were so delicious that we rarely ate out. However, we did visit two fantastic vegan restaurants in Sacramento: Himalaya Vegan Organic Restaurant and The Village of Om. Sacramento seems to have its fair share of vegan eateries!
While working during my travels, I’ve enjoyed vegan potlucks and healthy meals. I also discovered that restaurants catering to these needs are easily accessible. In Manhattan, for example, I found a wonderful organic vegan restaurant called Le Botanist, conveniently located near my hotel. My non-vegan friend loved it too!

Tips for Traveling and Staying Healthy
Staying healthy while traveling requires intention and a little planning. Here are some useful suggestions:
1. Choose Your Destination Wisely
Opt for places known for healthy cuisine that are fun too! If you’re traveling abroad, Bali and Phuket are great options. You may also find the traveling section on our website helpful.
2. Book a Healthy Resort
Many spas and resorts offer both relaxation and healthy food options. Consider Prakriti Shakti in India or The Farm in the Philippines – both focus on raw food and wellness. Websites like healthista or health and fitness travel can help you find more options.
3. Stay in an Airbnb with a Kitchen
No matter your destination, staying somewhere with a kitchen allows you to prepare your own healthy meals. Combine this with visits to local restaurants that meet your dietary needs. Be sure to check out our city directories for some ideas.
4. Join a Vegan Tour
Surprised? Several tour providers offer completely vegan or healthy vegan holiday packages. Examples include Flow Adventures for adventure holidays and A Taste of Health for vegan cruises. You can find more options here.
5. Try VegVisits
