Testimonial of Shilpashree

Pune-based architect, 33-year-old Shilpashree, was suffering since the past two and a half years, from urticaria. It was traumatic, until she made one change and she was on her way to a smooth recovery.

I suffered from severe urticaria for nearly two and a half years. I would wake up in the middle of the night with unbearable itching and big red hives on my hands and legs. I had tried everything, nothing cured my condition, no home remedies, no tablets, not even skin specialists! I was somehow temporarily subduing the allergy by taking anti-allergic pills, but was suffering both physically and mentally. It was traumatic.

Thanks to my pregnancy, last year, I started averting milk. Gradually,  I stopped consuming dairy products and by the 6th or 7th month of pregnancy, I quit dairy completely. Within just 5-6 months of quitting dairy, the allergy had gone! It was like a new lease of life for me. Now there was no looking back at dairy.

But there was another major health issue. I had gained a lot of weight, close to 25 kilos, during pregnancy. I also had anxiety issues, and post delivery lacked energy to do just about anything. And I was still consuming oils, sugar, jaggery, refined and non-organic products, unaware of their harmful health effects. I had been doing a lot of research on the net on how to live a healthy, dairy free life and I was lucky to have found SHARAN. One nutrition consultation with SHARAN and I was clear about my future health dietary/lifestyle choices.

Dr. Poonam, my nutritionist at SHARAN gave me a detailed synopsis and diet plan to follow. Within a month of following the lifestyle, I was able to lose close to 7 kilos. Thanks to SHARAN, I am consistently losing all those extra pounds with more energy and enthusiasm. My anxiety has reduced, and as a result, I feel less emotional now. I hope more and more people get their awakening for food and live a happy healthy life.

Readers are Healthier, is it?

Yes, book lovers rejoice, it’s been scientifically proven that reading is good for your health! Not only is it fun and gives you pleasure in the present, you are actually building up on your mental health too!

Reading helps improve your memory, as it stimulates different parts of your brain to work, and hence can help prevent Alzheimer’s. Reading is also therapeutic, as it takes one away from one’s worries, reducing stress. Reading a good book can actually make one feel positive and inspired too. Reading fiction has proven to make people more empathetic and also enhance one’s emotional intelligence.

And yes, we are talking books here, not newspapers, magazines, blogs or whatsapps! Not that they are not useful, but reading books is ‘reading’! Want ideas how to get into real reading? Well read on!

2) Join a library

That’s a great way to start. It’s good for the environment and your pocket too. Also it’s best to feel the book, see it, read the blurb and then take it up. Online shopping doesn’t give you that privilege.

3) Set up a time

Analyse your daily schedule and see how you can seep in the reading time. This could be 3 or 4 times of 10 minutes of reading a day, or reading at a stretch. You could also set a target – like you will read 25 pages a day!

4) Keep the phone away!

5) Read as a family or to your children

This could be a before dinner or after dinner routine. A lovely way to embark on some discussions too.

6) Join a book club or start one!

This ensures that you read as you are answerable to a group. It also opens up different perspectives, as each person will view the same book differently! If a group isn’t possible, maybe this could be an activity you could do with a friend, relative or your spouse, wherein you decide on a book, set a deadline and have a discussion once over.

7) Always carry your book

Like your wallet, let your book be with you and whenever there is a wait time – read the book!

8) Make a list

Jot down at least ten books that you would like to read. The pleasure of ticking after reading them is something that needs to be experienced.
