From the desk of Dr. Nandita Shah...
|
We live in a society that places constant expectations on us. From the moment we are born, much of our life story seems to be written for us. We are expected to go to school, attend college, secure a job or build a career, get married, have children, care for them, maintain social relationships, and look after our parents as they age.
Very few of us have the opportunity to pause and reflect on what we truly want from our lives. And even when we do, we are often caught up in the demands of everyday living—going on holidays, buying new clothes, dining out, purchasing a new home, and so on. This can keep us locked into what is often called the “rat race.” We may not know how to step away from it because change can feel uncomfortable, while familiar patterns provide a sense of security.
Yet when someone does break free from these patterns, their story often inspires others. We read about them in books, newspapers, and on social media because they dared to step back from the race, think differently, and create a new path for themselves.
Making such a shift can be challenging when we remain surrounded by the same environment and the same people. That is why stepping into a completely different setting and meeting new people can be so valuable. At SHARAN, our retreats are designed to create these opportunities. If you are open to the experience, they can offer a fresh perspective and perhaps even transform the way you see your life.

I found my answers to Holistic Health
Manjari Agarwal took the break to reconnect with herself at our 7-Day Health Retreat and found her answers!
Recipe - Healthy Cheese Pizza!
Ingredients
For the Cheese
- raw cashew cheese
- Seasoning – choice of unrefined salt, pepper, chilli powder, chives, dill or jalapeño
For the Sauce
- 2-4 onions, each quartered
- 6-8 tomatoes, each quartered
- 2 red peppers, chopped into large pieces
- Unrefined salt to taste
- Oregano to taste
- Chilli powder to taste
For the Base
Method
For the Cheese
To the cashew cheese, add any seasoning of your choice – salt / pepper / chilli powder / chives / dill / jalapeño.
For the Pizza Sauce
Blend the chopped onions, tomatoes and red peppers into a sauce. Transfer to a saucepan, bring to a boil on medium heat and then simmer on low heat, stirring every now and then, until it reduces to half the original quantity. Add salt, oregano and chilli powder to taste.
For the Dough
Mix whole wheat flour and salt and make a dough adding ½ cup of peanut yoghurt. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place. When it rises in 6-8 hours, roll out the dough into a pizza base. Prick with a fork and bake for 5 minutes in a preheated oven at 180 ºC.
Assembling the Pizza
Take the pizza base, apply the sauce and then add dollops of the cheese all over, or just apply a layer of cheese. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 ºC for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is brown.

Time for Reflection
Somewhere along the way, as life becomes busier and more demanding, we often lose touch with the things that truly matter. We may begin to take ourselves and our loved ones for granted.
Then, a sudden shock can put everything into perspective. It could be an illness, depression, the loss of a loved one, an accident, financial hardship, a natural disaster, or something else entirely. In those moments, we may pause, reflect, and realise that life is more uncertain than we imagined. What if we prepared for that realisation before a crisis forced us to?
Take a moment to reflect on the following areas of your life. Have you become disconnected? If so, now may be the time to take action.
1. Your Body
Your body is the only place you will ever truly live. Are you caring for it as it deserves? Are you sleeping well, nourishing yourself properly, exercising regularly, and maintaining good hygiene? Are you ensuring you move through life with strength, vitality, and energy?
2. Your Physical Health
Your body communicates through aches, pains, and symptoms. Are you listening? If not, it may eventually speak through illness or disease. Pay attention to the signals your body is sending you.
3. Your Mental Well-being
Are you experiencing emotional pain, stress, or inner turmoil? Do you find yourself becoming irritated easily? Being peaceful within is not a luxury—it is a vital part of overall health.
4. Your Relationships
Do you invest enough quality time in the people who matter most—yourself, your family, friends, and community? Have you nurtured meaningful connections and maintained balance in your relationships?
5. Your Passion and Purpose
Do you feel you are being true to yourself? Are you living a life of meaning and purpose, aligned with your values and aspirations?
6. Your Environment and Contribution
Are you contributing positively to your community, society, country, and the world around you? Are you helping create the kind of environment in which you would like to live?
