From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

There are times when in a large crowd, everyone can be seen busy on their phone. I see that at the airport or on a bus or train. Sometimes even at meetings, people divide their attention between what is being said and their phones.

Recently, I have had patients contact me for mobile phone addiction and digital gambling addiction. I remember in the past, patients contacted me for smoking, alcohol and drug addictions. But now, being in the digital age new addictions have arisen. I have noticed how addictive social media can be. I have had many patients who sleep too late at night because of social media. I have seen parents so engrossed on their phone that they don’t realise that their kids need more attention.

I think social media can be good. We live in a world where communication is the key to making the social changes that are important for us to evolve as a species. I see plenty of petitions that we can collectively sign to vote for change. WhatsApp is another tool that if used well can help our communication and collective growth. I think the mobile phone can be helpful in various ways. I sometimes wonder how we managed without them and Google maps.

However, for some people it is almost impossible to limit themselves on their digital devices. There are people and agencies who are spending both money and time to think of new ways to attract our attention on social media. Thanks to AI we keep seeing ads that are most suitable for us. We need to have more control and be more vigilant than ever before. Sleeping late or not sleeping enough eventually takes a toll on your health as does not having time for exercise, cooking, learning new things and productive social engagement and relationships.

It's important to be aware that this addiction is as bad as other kinds of addictions. Initially it may need some control and planning but it is achievable.

Digital Detox is actually an act of Self-Love

SHARAN facilitator Rose Pinto shares how accidentally she discovered that she needs to switch off!

One day, I asked my phone, "Am I really addicted to you? I give you proper rest for 12 hours, yet I still search for you. How can I detach and use your energy mindfully?" When you ask such a question, you will get the answer. After two days, my phone had a small fall, and the screen broke. Then I asked myself, "Why did this happen?" I got my answer: I needed a break from my phone. But the universe heard "broke" instead of "break." So, my phone went for repair for 24 hours!

That day, I realized how dependent I had become and felt a sense of suffocation. After that day, I decided to give myself and my phone a one-day detox. It has been a beautiful journey. That day, I understood that digital detox is one of the biggest acts of loving yourself because you're doing it for your personal growth.

You are born in Mother Earth's lap to find yourself. When you love yourself, you will find yourself. Nowadays, we are stressed with small things, like the roads not being good. We discuss this with a group of people, and after that, we unknowingly carry that stress with us. We scroll through YouTube and Instagram on our phones whenever we are bored. The phone has become a new painkiller for people, including me.

On my digital detox days, I ask myself, "What will make me happy today?" I have started doing art, learning music or lyrics to sing to myself, spending time alone, and dating myself. When I do that, I feel like the little "me" gets happy. I giggle to myself whenever I get the art or the music right. I enjoy the wind, eat fruits, and feel satisfied. I visit a friend's house; just listen to them without any judgment. I find calmness and stillness within me. I am just flowing.
