21st June is World Music Day. Music is a source of entertainment, relaxation, a way of expression and much more. Specific music can evoke specific emotions which is why music is so carefully selected and used for everything – from movies to marketing.

The mind and body are intimately connected. Since stress can cause disease, it follows that stress reduction is important in restoring health. As music evokes emotions it can be used in healing.

Music therapy is the clinical use of music to accomplish individualised goals such as reducing stress and improving self-expression. Music can be used subliminally to improve mood and thereby health too.

Music is also a great way to make exercise more fun – it’s an essential part of dancing, aerobics and Zumba. Headphones, of course at the right volume, can help make that mundane jog or walk more enjoyable.

So, bring music and melody into your life for that added health boost.

Baked Stuffed Tomatoes  

Try this delicious grain-free dish and couple it with a salad and some beautiful music. You are in for a lovely experience.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 large tomatoes
  • 100 g button mushrooms, chopped
  • 100 g corn kernels
  • 1 red onion, chopped
  • 1 red pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp toasted chopped garlic
  • 3-4 tbsp raw cashew cheese

Method

Scoop out the insides of the tomatoes. Cook the mushrooms with the onion, red pepper and corn until tender.  The mushrooms will release their own juice, so cook until the required consistency is obtained. Mix in the toasted garlic and stuff the tomatoes. Spread the cheese on top and bake for half hour in a preheated oven, until the tomatoes are tender. Take care not to overcook.

Serves 4

While eating right, exercising and being positive play a significant role in our well-being, music too has a special place. It is said that “Music is life itself”. Indeed with the beautiful melodies of the birds singing, the joyful songs that bring about lovely memories and the beats that make us want to dance and be happy, how can health be left behind?

Did you realise music actually heals? After all, there is something called music therapy.  Find out how listening to music does so much more…

1. It’s heart-healthy

Research has shown that blood flows more easily when music is played, which can reduce heart rate and even lower blood pressure.

2. Decreases physical pain

Music is often a tool used in clinics and operating rooms, as it eases pain. This happens due to the release of endorphins in the brain that spread throughout the body relieving pain.

3. Makes you eat less

Playing soft music and dimming the lights during a meal makes you calm down, and eat less too.

4. Helps you work out

Music can keep your fitness on track as it boosts physical performance and increases endurance during a tough exercise session.

5. Provides a total brain workout 

Listening to or even making music increases blood flow to the brain regions that control emotions.  

6. Improves mental health

Listening to uplifting songs or singing along can help increase the serotonin levels in the brain which helps boost our mood. 

7. Memory improvement 

Listening to music can help stimulate the brain and improve memory recall. In fact, music therapy has found results in patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia too.

8. Eases labour

Music during childbirth has been shown to increase oxytocin and beta-endorphins which help with pain management and moving the labour forward.

9. Aids sleep

Since music helps you feel relaxed and at ease, it also makes it easier to sleep and even enhances your sleep quality.

10. Reduces stress levels

Happy hormones called endorphins, released when listening to music, reduce stress levels and even help in healing emotional wounds.
