“My wake-up call was being admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital at the age of 34 years. I was admitted with a blood oxygen level of 80 instead of 95 and I could not breathe.
The doctors told me I had developed asthma due to ‘some allergies’ and that I would in all probability need to be on daily medications for the rest of my life. In addition, I was told that I was pre-diabetic and due to a family history of diabetes, it was only a matter of time before I developed the same. When I was recuperating at home post the health scare, I found that my eyes were dry and painful most of the time. The doctor told me I was at the risk of developing a disease called glaucoma.
I was prescribed a lot of medicines including steroids and none of the doctors could tell me a single thing that I could do to prevent all these diseases from becoming a permanent part of my life. It was a helpless, hopeless situation to be in. What made it worse was that I was only 34 years, vegetarian (I used to eat eggs occasionally) and a non-smoker / non-drinker.
After the initial shock wore off, I decided that there must be some way that I could help myself. I started researching on the internet. One thing led to another and soon I chanced upon Dr Nandita Shah’s interview on reversing diabetes. Hearing her say that “diabetes is reversible”’ was like music to my ears. I was intrigued and wrote her a long email describing my medical issues and she reverted the next day. I took a one month telephonic consultation with her and she taught me about the effects of food on our bodies. I started following what I learnt and in a matter of weeks, I started to feel much more energetic. I stopped taking my daily asthma medicines and I was fine. I got my blood sugar tested and got back a normal reading. I felt that I got my life back.
I was so impressed with the results that I decided to complete the one of its kind certification course in Whole Food Plant Based Diet from E-Cornell University. This is a program developed by Dr T Colin Campbell, author of ‘The China Study’. I successfully achieved the certificate in 2014.
My mission in life now is to help as many people as I can to come off the unnecessary medications given by traditional doctors and share my knowledge that it is indeed possible to prevent and reverse many diseases.” – Shruti Malik, New Delhi
