From the desk of Dr. Nandita Shah...

Children today are facing more health challenges than ever before. There are many reasons for this. Parents are often not in optimal health when they conceive. Rising infertility rates mean that more children are conceived through IVF, and many mothers take medications throughout pregnancy. Our diets have also changed dramatically, with a growing reliance on processed foods, ready-made meals, and restaurant food.
Life is faster and more demanding than ever, leaving many parents with less time and energy for their children. At the same time, children are juggling demanding school curricula, competitive exams, extracurricular activities, peer pressure, and parental expectations.
The result is alarming. Conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, hormonal issues, and autoimmune disorders are appearing at younger ages than ever before. The good news is that most of these conditions are preventable through simple, healthy habits—and those habits begin at home.

Fun Ways to Teach Healthy Habits to Kids
One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is good health. You may have all the wealth in the world, but even a simple headache can disrupt your day. Today, lifestyle diseases are affecting younger age groups, and social and cultural influences make healthy choices increasingly difficult. Even schools and colleges often serve unhealthy food. As a result, health education has become more important than ever.
Invest in your child’s health before it is too late. Here are some practical ways to help them develop healthy habits for life.
1. Children Do What Parents Do
Children learn far more from what they see than from what they are told. Many of us fondly remember the meals our mothers prepared with love. Home cooking creates lasting memories and healthy habits. If parents cook regularly, children are more likely to cook for themselves when they grow up.
2. Educate Them Visually
Whenever you come across an interesting article on health, share it with your children. Watch health documentaries together as a family. There are also many informative short videos available online that can help reinforce healthy habits in an engaging way.
3. Teach Them to Read Labels
When your children want to buy a packaged food item, encourage them to read the ingredient list and nutrition label. Help them research ingredients they do not recognize so they can make informed choices.
4. Take Them to Farms and Farmers' Markets
There is no better way for children to appreciate food than by seeing where it comes from. Visiting farms and farmers’ markets helps them connect with nature and understand the effort involved in growing food.
5. Cook Together
Getting both boys and girls involved in the kitchen is a wonderful way to spend quality time as a family. When children participate in preparing meals, they develop a greater appreciation for food and learn valuable life skills that will serve them well in the future.
6. Make Eating Out an Occasion
In the past, dining out was a special treat. Today, many people eat food from outside almost every day. As eating out becomes more common, cooking risks becoming a lost skill. Make restaurant meals an occasional event. Gradually reduce the frequency of eating out, and when you do, choose restaurants carefully and order thoughtfully.
7. Be Smart About Healthy Food
Learn simple ways to make meals healthier. Prepare homemade sauces and dressings. You do not need to announce that a dish contains no oil, sugar, or dairy. If food is delicious and attractively presented, most children will happily enjoy it without noticing the difference.
8. Get Creative in the Kitchen
Make colourful wraps using spinach for green and beetroot for pink, and fill them with ingredients your children enjoy. Create attractive fruit platters, serve salads in glasses, and experiment with a new healthy recipe every week. Creativity can make healthy eating fun.
9. Take Them to a Hospital
Helping children understand the connection between lifestyle choices, illness, and hospital visits can be a powerful learning experience. Real-life examples often leave a lasting impression.
10. Build a Healthy Friend Circle
Children are strongly influenced by their peers. If their friends are making healthy choices, they are more likely to do the same. Work with other parents to encourage healthier food options at gatherings and birthday parties. Junk food does not have to be the centrepiece of every celebration.
11. Volunteer at Your Child’s School
School administrators often have many responsibilities and may welcome support in promoting health awareness. Consider helping to organize health talks, workshops, or educational activities for students and parents.
12. Don’t Run After Your Child With Food
Children will eat when they are hungry. Allow them to listen to their bodies and experience natural hunger cues. Avoid pressuring them to eat or deciding how much they should consume. Trust them to develop a healthy relationship with food.
13. Keep Healthy Snacks Easily Available
Stock your home with nutritious options such as fruits, nuts, seeds, and homemade treats. When healthy choices are readily available, children are more likely to choose them. At the same time, try to keep highly processed and addictive packaged foods out of the house.
14. Check Vitamin D and B12 Levels
Even children with healthy habits can develop deficiencies due to modern indoor lifestyles. We have seen low vitamin D and B12 levels even in very young children. Consider testing these levels periodically and supplementing if necessary under professional guidance.
15. Don’t Be a Nag
Constantly lecturing children about food often has the opposite effect. If they make unhealthy choices occasionally, be patient. Children learn over time. Lead by example, inspire them gently, and trust the process.
