From the desk of Dr. Nandita Shah...
|
I was just 25 years old when I lost my mom to cancer. My two brothers were younger, and she had been our sense of security. When she passed, I know her thoughts were not on her own suffering, but on how her children would manage without her.
As a child, I may have taken her for granted. But today, I see clearly how much she gave, how much she sacrificed.
It’s because of her that I learnt about real health. Despite having someone to cook for us, my mother would always step into the kitchen and make something special. It’s thanks to that that all three of us became good cooks. She never formally taught us—we simply learnt by being around her.
When I lost my mother, my world fell apart, but it also made me very independent. I remain deeply grateful for all that she gave me.
I know I was very lucky to have my mother for 25 years. Many are not as fortunate—not just among humans, but across other species too.
I’m reminded of a friend whose cow gave birth to a male calf. When I spoke to her about why I am vegan, and how in animal agriculture mothers are separated from their babies, something shifted. She had lost her own mother as a child, and that pain stayed with her. She immediately connected with the calf’s experience—and chose not to send him for slaughter, as had been done before.
When we connect our own emotions with the experiences of others, compassion naturally arises. And as a beautiful side effect… so does better health.

Celebrating Mother’s Day—The Healthy Way
This Mother’s Day, let’s go beyond flowers and sweets. Let’s celebrate in a way that truly honours mothers—by nurturing health, compassion, and connection.
1. Cook Together
Prepare a wholesome plant-based meal with your mother or for her. Keep it simple, colourful, and full of love. Cooking together creates memories that last far longer than any gift.
2. Gift Health
Instead of processed treats, consider gifting fresh fruits, a nourishing homemade dish, or even enrolling together in a health program or workshop.
3. Move with Joy
Go for a walk, dance together, or try a gentle yoga session. Movement shared with loved ones becomes celebration, not exercise.
4. Share Stories
Take time to sit together and talk. Ask her about her childhood, her dreams, her challenges. Listening is one of the most meaningful gifts we can give.
5. Practice Compassion
Extend your love beyond your immediate family. Choose meals and habits that do not harm other mothers—human or animal. Compassion is the foundation of true wellness. Motherhood is not just about giving life—it is about nurturing, protecting, and loving unconditionally. This Mother’s Day, let us honour that spirit by taking steps toward a healthier, kinder world for all.
