From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...

It is interesting how patients with significant health concerns often choose to discuss skin blemishes or hair fall first. We tend to focus more on outward appearance than inner health!
Hair issues are among the most common causes of concern today. Enormous amounts of money are spent on haircuts, treatments, colouring, streaking, straightening, curling, grafting, wigs, and countless products — shampoos, conditioners, gels, and mousses. And indeed, these can change how we look. A haircut or new style can transform our appearance instantly.
We all want to look good and are often willing to spend generously at salons — sometimes more readily than we would on improving our health. But here is the good news: you can do a lot for your hair while simultaneously improving your overall wellbeing. By reducing chemical exposure and nourishing your body from within, both your health and your hair benefit. A true win-win. Ready to try?

41-year-old CA & IT professional Pooja Nagda shares how she took care of her hair health
For the last decade, I watched my hair thin slowly, but by November 2025, the loss became alarming. Returning to the office after five years, I felt a dip in my confidence. Everywhere I looked, people were using harsh chemical treatments like Keratin or Botox. I knew I wanted a natural, sustainable path—not a temporary fix with side effects.
Working with SHARAN nutritionist Madhura Vayal was a turning point. She helped me realize that amidst the beautiful chaos of motherhood, I had completely lost my hair care routine. We didn’t do anything drastic; we simply implemented small, manageable lifestyle changes and switched to safe, plant-based products. By incorporating more fresh fruits and vibrant salads into my diet, I started seeing a real shift. Today, the heavy fall has stopped. More importantly, I no longer shy away from the camera. I am very grateful to the SHARAN team and Madhura. I feel empowered knowing that I’ve restored my hair health from the inside out.

- ¼ cup mint leaves

- Unrefined salt to taste
- ¾ tsp date paste
- 4 – 5 whole green peppercorns (use black peppercorns if the green ones are not available)

Hair issues anyone?
Healthy hair is often a reflection of a healthy body. Hair thinning, dandruff, or excessive hair fall may be signals worth paying attention to. Hair health depends on what we eat, what we think, and how we live.
Here are some simple ways to support healthier hair naturally:
1. Go plant-based
Diet plays a powerful role in hair health. Diets rich in whole plant foods provide antioxidants and nutrients that support circulation, hormonal balance, and cellular repair — all essential for healthy hair growth.
2. The curry leaves magic
Adding curry leaves to meals or green smoothies can support hair health. Rich in antioxidants and beta-carotene, they help strengthen roots, reduce hair fall, nourish the scalp, and may help delay premature greying. All greens help — but curry leaves have a special reputation for hair care.
3. Eat healthy fats
Healthy hair needs healthy fats from within. Include nuts and seeds such as chia, walnuts, almonds, sesame seeds, and coconut in your daily diet. When nutrition improves, excessive external oiling becomes less necessary. If hair feels dry, a few drops of oil applied lightly after washing is sufficient.
4. Wash your hair less
Wash only when needed and allow hair to air-dry whenever possible. Frequent washing, heat styling, and chlorine exposure can weaken hair over time.
5. Avoid chemical hair colours
Most hair dyes contain harsh chemicals that do not support long-term hair health. If colouring is necessary, choose herbal or natural alternatives.
6. Brush mindfully
Gentle brushing helps distribute natural oils and reduce breakage. Avoid brushing wet hair, and trim periodically to maintain healthy ends.
7. The mind connection
Stress and emotional tension affect the body more than we realize. Cultivating calmness, trust, and balance supports overall wellbeing — and healthier hair.
8. Reduce reliance on medications
Several medications — including antibiotics, antidepressants, hormonal pills, and cholesterol-lowering drugs — may contribute to hair fall as a side effect. Building health through lifestyle choices can help reduce long-term dependence, under medical guidance.
