From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...
|
In an age of information overload, choosing the right diet can be confusing, with arguments for and against plant-based eating everywhere.
When faced with such dilemmas, I turn to Nature — because Nature is never wrong. It’s we who go wrong when we go against it.
We are instinctively drawn to fruits and vegetables. We can eat them raw, just as every animal in nature eats its food raw. Raw foods are rich in nutrients — the body’s spare parts for healing.
Unlike true carnivores or omnivores, we do not salivate at the sight of a live chicken, goat, or fish. We cannot pounce on or tear apart prey, nor can we eat it raw. We need knives, stoves, and seasoning to make it palatable. This alone shows that anatomically and physiologically, we are designed as herbivores.
Furthermore, no other species drinks the milk of another animal, yet humans continue to consume cow’s milk throughout their lives.
While animal products may have been necessary for survival during times of scarcity, today we live in abundance. Consuming foods not meant for us has made us sick. That’s why I prescribe plants — and the results are phenomenal. The body is a remarkable self-healing system when given the right fuel.

Is Veganism expensive?
Recipe - Ragi Milk
Most of us drink milk for calcium. Imagine the amount of calcium ragi milk will have! Enjoy:)
Ingredients
- ½ cup ragi (finger millet)
- 2 cups water (use 1½ cups water for a creamier milk)
- 2-3 cardamom pods (elaichi)
- 3-4 dates, pitted (adjust sweetness to taste)
Method
1. Rinse the ragi well, then soak it in ½ cup water for 4-6 hours or overnight.
2. Add the ragi to a blender along with the soaking water, cardamom pods and dates. Blend into a smooth paste.
3. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, pressing to extract as much liquid as possible.
4. Return the strained ragi pulp to the blender, add half of the remaining water, and blend again until smooth. Strain this batch as well.
5. Repeat the blending process one more time with the last portion of water, and strain thoroughly. Use the leftover pulp in ladoos.
6. Pour into glasses and enjoy this fresh, nutritious ragi milk, either as-is or chilled.
Storage/Shelf Life
Can be stored in an airtight jar for not more than 2 days.

World Vegan Day — A Call for Conscious Living
1st November is celebrated as World Vegan Day — a reminder to reflect on the reasons for choosing a plant-based lifestyle that go far beyond personal health.
1. It’s aligned with Nature
When we align ourselves with Nature, we recognise the symbiosis that sustains all life and learn to respect every species. Living in harmony with Nature allows balance and peace to return — both within us and around us.
2. It protects biodiversity
Raising 80 billion land animals every year for food destroys forests and consumes vast crops grown to feed these animals. In the process, we destroy habitats, accelerate species extinction, and destabilise the climate. Every plant-based meal protects forests, rivers, and wildlife.
3. It reduces hunger
We grow enough food to feed the world, yet millions starve while most crops go to feed animals raised for slaughter. Eating higher on the food chain wastes resources — land, water, and energy. A plant-based world could easily nourish everyone.
4. It supports social justice
Exploitation — of humans, animals, or the planet — thrives when our choices are disconnected from our values. When we choose compassion, fairness, and sustainability in every action, exploitation becomes impossible.
5. It protects our planet’s future
Animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change, deforestation, and water pollution. By choosing plants, we drastically reduce our carbon footprint and help ensure a livable planet for future generations.
6. It’s an act of compassion
Every meal is a moral choice. A plant-based diet allows us to live without causing unnecessary suffering — proving that kindness and health can go hand in hand.
