From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...
|
Diwali, the festival of lights, is just around the corner. Traditionally a time of joy, reflection, and togetherness, it has increasingly become associated with shopping sprees, indulgence, and unfortunately, rising levels of disease and pollution.
This year, many regions in India are still recovering from devastating floods and landslides. At the same time, the growing disparity between the rich and the poor becomes especially visible during festive celebrations. The commodification of Diwali—with excessive consumerism, fireworks, and overindulgence—not only takes away from its essence but also adds to air and noise pollution, leaving those with asthma and lung issues struggling to breathe during what should be a season of joy.
But Diwali is meant to be the festival of light—a time to spread warmth, kindness, and hope. This year, let us come together to celebrate in ways that uplift everyone, restore harmony, and truly light up lives.
The SHARAN team comes together to wish you and your loved ones a healthy, happy, and truly radiant Diwali.

Recipe - Chocolate Kaju Katli
Try this delicious and easy to make kaju katli at home. Sprinkle it with your love and best wishes for your family.
Ingredients
- 2 cups cashew nuts
- 1 cup date paste
- 80 ml water
- ¼ tsp cardamom powder
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cacao powder (a little more if you so desire)
Method
Clean the cashew nuts and roast until crunchy (without discolouration). Once cool, transfer to a blender and make a fine powder. Take date paste, cardamom and water in a heavy-bottomed vessel. Heat on low heat. Bring it to a boil and simmer for a minute. Add powdered cashew nuts and immediately remove from the heat. Mix well, ensuring that there are no lumps in it.
Sieve cacao powder onto this mixture and mix well. Return to the stove and cook until you are able to make a non-sticky, soft ball with the dough. Transfer the mixture to a parchment paper and leave aside, until just lukewarm. While warm, cover with another butter paper. Use a rolling pin to flatten out the dough. Cut into desired shapes. Allow to cool and transfer to an airtight container.
Serve for Diwali and enjoy!

How to Make Diwali Happier for All
This Diwali, let’s return to the essence of the festival—compassion, gratitude, and light. By choosing wisely, we can create a celebration that not only brightens our own homes but also touches countless others.
1. Light diyas instead of fireworks
Bring brightness without harming the environment.
2. Gift health, not commodities
Fruits, nuts, and wholesome treats nurture body and soul.
3. Reconnect with loved ones
Meaningful conversations and time together matter more than exotic trips.
4. Choose quality over quantity
Enjoy nourishing, lovingly prepared meals rather than overindulging.
5. Spread joy where it’s needed most
Support orphanages, animal sanctuaries, or community initiatives where your gifts create lasting happiness.
