From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...
|
With our population growing exponentially, nearly everyone can say that the world is no longer what it used to be. I grew up surrounded by nature, and at a time when plastic was new. Single use plastic was not available, and computers and mobile phones were non-existent. There was space and time.
Today the world has changed. Cancer is becoming increasingly commonplace. Cancer occurs when a group of body cells multiply exponentially and with their uncontrolled growth they kill the organism. This is symbolic of our activity in the world! We humans have grown out of control, to the detriment of biodiversity and nature. Man made products are everywhere and we cannot do without them now – our mobile phones, computers, the plastic. Are we humans a cancer that will kill our planet, our only home? The extreme weather, species extinction and disease are all symptoms of our planetary destruction. Will we collectively wake up in time? Or will the cancer kill us? Time will tell…

Real Summer Coolers
Summers are getting warmer each year. Sea levels are rising, oceans are warmer, longer and intense droughts threaten crops, species extinction is common…..our planet’s biodiversity is under risk. “Climate change” we utter and move on, expecting the authorities to work on it.
But it could be that those very authorities are fuelling the crises. The only hope lies in each one of us. If we wish to leave a better place for the forthcoming generations, we had better start NOW! We, as individuals need to take charge of our planet. Read to find out what you, as an individual, can do to invite better summers…
1. Replace meat
Animal agriculture leads to deforestation. This is the single largest contributor of greenhouse gases, water shortages, land degradation and biodiversity loss! The UN and FAO report of 2006, titled ‘Livestock’s Long Shadow’, states that a global shift towards a plant based diet is vital to save world. The good news – there are so many meat replacements that you won’t feel deprived!
2. Replace Dairy
Cows bred for milk and meat produce large amounts of methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases. With so many delicious plant based dairy alternatives, we can feed our tastebuds without depending on cows.
3. Replace Plastic
Plastic and climate change are totally connected. As plastic bags decompose, they release greenhouse gases and carcinogens into the atmosphere. Avoid accepting that plastic carry bag or buying things that are unnecessarily packaged in plastic.
4. Go Organic
The chemicals in pesticides are destroying the soil. When you start demanding organic, you force the farmer to grow organic.
5. Use energy-efficient items
Invest in eco-friendly products and initiatives. Walk, cycle, re-use, recycle and don’t waste.
6. Practice Minimalism
‘I walked into a shop and realised that there are so many things that man can do without’, said a famous philosopher.
7. Remember that our children will face greater challenges
We are facing a problem of overpopulation. Contemplate before having children. Children face even greater survival challenges in a quickly changing world. Many people choose to be child free precisely for this reason. Why not adopt or work with children or animals instead?
8. Make others aware
Speak up! Many people are too caught up in daily challenges to think long term. Take time to learn and make others aware.
