From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...
|
Most of us grow up believing that our job, income, and social status define our success. We are encouraged to work harder, earn more, and collect symbols of achievement — holidays, gadgets, cars, titles. Rarely are we asked a deeper question: Is our work meaningful? Is it nourishing us?
Many of us are born straight into the rat race.
In India, urban living often means pollution, congestion, noise, and constant pressure. Long commutes eat into our days, leaving little time for rest, exercise, family, or simple joy. Sleep becomes compromised, and we rely on stimulants like tea, coffee, and colas just to keep going.
Change feels frightening — the unknown always does. And yet, increasingly, we hear of highly educated people stepping away from conventional careers to pursue farming, social enterprises, NGOs, reforestation, or rewilding. They discover something deeply fulfilling: that giving back to society brings far more joy than any status symbol ever could.
If you are still very much in the rat race, don’t lose heart. You can still protect and nurture your health while you work. And if you are lucky enough to have found your purpose or passion, then caring for your health becomes even more essential — because it allows you to serve with energy, clarity, and joy.

The diet has contributed majorly in helping me maintain good health despite my age and some age related health issues
Mumbai based, 82 year old businessman shares how he manages to balance work and health…
Me and my wife Bharati attended the 7 day retreat program conducted by Capt Joseph . It was a well-structured and well conducted programme and excellent for beginners who wish to be initiated in healthy diet program and for improvement and maintenance of health by following health routine and practices.
I found it very useful and encouraging. We strictly follow the SHARAN plant based, oil free diet for over two years. The diet has contributed majorly in helping me maintain good health despite my age and some age related health issues.
I have my lunch at home and then go to the office and virtually have nothing there. I don’t have any tea/ coffee at all. Instead sometimes I have green leaves/ ginger infused hot water.
I return from the office around 6 pm and have early dinner by 7 pm and then go for a walk 3/4 times a week.
Remaining active and physical movements are important and also remaining socially active with a group of friends is vital too. We lead a simple authentic life style which causes minimum stress.

Ensure Health as You Work
In the process of making a living — and often more than a living — we tend to sacrifice our health and well-being. Yet good health is not optional. It is a vital investment. Only when we are healthy can we truly enjoy our earnings, nurture meaningful relationships, and live with contentment.
Here are some simple, practical tweaks you can weave into your working hours. Remember: small changes create big results.
1. Blend green smoothies at work
Invest in a small blender for the office. Keep bananas frozen in the office freezer and carry your leafy greens from home. Add water, blend, and your smoothie is ready in minutes.
2. Carry a salad — with dressing separate
Mix the dressing just before eating and enjoy your salad before anything else. Bringing a light lunch from home is always better than ordering in.
3. Keep healthy snacks handy
Fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, roasted tidbits, or homemade naturally sweetened treats prevent unhealthy cravings.
4. Stay hydrated
Keep a filled water bottle on your desk and aim to finish it by the end of the day.
5. Move whenever possible
Walk to work if you can, or park further away. Opt for standing or walking meetings. Set an hourly alarm to step away from screens — stretch, walk, breathe, or meditate for a few minutes.
6. Keep a spiritual wisdom calendar
Read the thought of the day and reflect on how you can apply it in your life.
7. Write affirmations daily
As soon as you sit at your desk, write a page of affirmations. Repeat this practice at lunchtime or before leaving work.
8. Understand your colleagues
Once you understand the nature of the people you work with, interactions become easier. Don’t try to change others — change yourself instead.
9. Encourage workplace wellness
Suggest health-related sessions through HR. Introduce monthly themes like No Sugar January, Herbal Tea February, or Oil-Free March. Sports and movement-based activities also help build team spirit.
10. Disconnect after work
Once you leave the office, it’s time for you and your family. Unless truly urgent, staying off work communications is essential for a healthy work–life balance.
