From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...
|
I hope you are still doing well with your New Year resolutions.
These days, we are witnessing increasing wars, violence, turmoil, and suffering across the world. Unsurprisingly, this external chaos often translates into internal turmoil—manifesting as anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. I recently read that anxiety and depression are affecting more and more people, especially adolescents and young adults.
Many experts link this mental health crisis to our current lifestyles and food choices. Research shows that unhealthy food can trigger inflammatory reactions in the body, which are associated not only with anxiety and depression, but also with several chronic diseases. The mind and body are deeply interconnected. When the body is inflamed or burdened with chronic illness, emotional resilience naturally weakens.
It’s important to recognise that much of this suffering is not inevitable. We have been taught to accept the rat race as normal, even necessary. Going against this conditioning is not easy, but a great deal can be changed simply by making conscious shifts in our daily routines and habits.
This is now our challenge – to move away from a culture of disease, exploitation, and commodification, and consciously build a culture of health, compassion, and peace.

Markers for Your Health Constitution
SHARAN’s vision is to build a culture of health.
Every individual’s life rests on four pillars — physical health, intellectual development, emotional strength, and spiritual well-being. When these are in balance, life feels fulfilling and vibrant. If they aren’t, don’t worry — awareness is the first step. Identify what needs attention and start working on it.
Let us help you design your personal health constitution. Review these basic parameters and identify areas that may need strengthening.
1. Go Whole Food Plant-Based
The human body is designed to thrive on wholesome foods made by Mother Nature. When we move away from this, we often pay the price through ill-health.
Ask yourself:
• Are you getting enough fibre daily?
• Are you minimising processed foods?
• Are you regularly choosing alkaline, natural foods?
2. Move
The human body is meant to move. Beyond workouts and walks, pay attention to how much time you spend sitting versus moving during the day.
An important rule: do not sit for more than an hour at a stretch. Get up, stretch, walk around, take short breaks, and keep moving.
3. Supplement
The only vitamins most of us need to supplement are Vitamin D and Vitamin B12. Get your levels checked and supplement if required.
4. Rack Your Brain
Are you stimulating your brain enough? Without mental engagement, many seniors end up facing conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Challenge your mind with crosswords, puzzles, Sudoku, new recipes, learning new skills, or picking up hobbies — the possibilities are endless.
5. Build Your Inner Strength
At the core, we are all seeking happiness. True happiness comes from inner strength — the ability to face life’s situations with resilience.
Meditation, gratitude practices, affirmations, and spiritual learning can help nurture this strength.
6. Work on Connecting with the Divine
We are all divine beings, and intrinsically connected to each other and we are all here with a spiritual purpose. Yet we are often taught otherwise by our culture. Trust your intuition. Stay connected.
