From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...
|
In their article “The Unrelenting Epidemic of Diabetes in India: Do the Numbers Matter?” (J Assoc Physicians India 2025; 73(5):12–13), Mohan V. and Tiwaskar M. highlight the alarming rise of type 2 diabetes in India.
The estimated number of people living with diabetes in India has surged from 32 million in 2000 to 63 million in 2012, 74 million in 2021, and now 101 million, according to the ICMR–INDIAB Study. Even more concerning, the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) survey now reports 212 million Indians living with diabetes.
While genetics play a role, environment and lifestyle are far more influential — and in most cases, diabetes can be prevented or even reversed if detected early. Unfortunately, as the numbers grow, diabetes has become so common that it’s often seen as “normal.” This normalization makes people less motivated to make the lifestyle changes that could transform their health.
The truth is that diabetes affects every organ in the body, leading to serious complications like silent heart attacks, kidney disease, blindness, and amputations. But the good news is that among lifestyle diseases, diabetes responds most rapidly to positive lifestyle changes.
At SHARAN, we offer a range of programs and interventions that have helped countless people reverse diabetes naturally.
If you or your loved ones are living with diabetes, please reach out to us — we’ll help you find the most suitable path to healing.

A one-day seminar changed our lives!
80 year old Dr Devender Nath shares how nine years ago, he and his wife Asha decided to take health into their own hands and how they have got remarkable results!
In 2016, at age 71, I constantly struggled with throat infections — antibiotics had become routine. My son, a fitness enthusiast, enrolled my wife Asha (67) and me in a one-day SHARAN seminar at BKC.
We walked into a hall full of people under 40 — and yes, we could sense their amusement: “How much longer do these oldies want to live?” But that day, our lives changed forever.
The hall was packed, with participants from across India — including four doctors. Dr. Nandita Shah introduced us to the SHARAN philosophy, and from that very day, our health transformation journey began. Asha also attended cookery classes with Ms. Reyna.
Since then — no antibiotics, not even a Crocin! We shifted completely to plant-based, unrefined foods and gave up milk. Additionally a brisk 30-minute walk – 4 times a week and rigorous yoga – twice a week.
The results have been truly remarkable.
1. Weight dropped from 76 kg to 63 kg (and I’ve since regained a healthy 2 kg).
2. No new medicines except my regular heart medication.
3. No annual medical check-ups from 2016 to 2019 — I simply didn’t feel the need!
4. No medicines for prostate enlargement.
5. No vitamins or supplements.
6. High energy levels all day long.
Recently (2025), I checked my fasting blood sugar — it was 56 mg/dL. My diabetologist advised me to stop all diabetes medication (I had been on 2 × 850 mg Metadoze IPR). On follow-up, my HbA1c was 5.9, and the doctor confirmed I could stay off the medicines completely.
Asha does not have diabetes and now only takes a low dose of blood pressure.
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Nandita Shah and SHARAN for showing us the path to natural healing. In just a few years, I was able to reverse my diabetes completely, and together, we have found lasting health, vitality, and peace of mind.
Recipe - Banana Ice-cream
This is an unbelievably creamy and versatile ‘ice cream’ and it is so easy to make!
Ingredients
- 4 (or more) ripe bananas
- Cinnamon
- Walnuts
Method
Place peeled halved bananas in a box in the freezer. After 2 days or more, take them out and blend in a blender or food processor until you get a smooth, creamy ice cream.
Add some cinnamon and walnuts for an extra punch. Serve immediately as soon as it is made.
Variations
Garnish with berries, raisins or chopped fruit of your choice.
Replace the cinnamon and walnuts with zest of ¼ of an orange and 1 tbsp grated ginger.
Replace cinnamon with vanilla extract or vanilla powder for vanilla ice cream.
Add frozen berries (strawberries/raspberries/blueberries…) to the frozen bananas to get a berry ice cream. Omit the cinnamon and walnuts.
Add frozen chopped ripe mango or jackfruit to get a fruit ice cream. Omit cinnamon and walnuts.
Add cocoa powder to get a chocolate ice cream. Cinnamon and walnuts optional.

Why is Diabetes on the rise?
There are several reasons why diabetes has increased dramatically in the last few decades.
1. Increase in fat consumption
This is not just fried and greasy foods but also animal products because they are always full of fat. The fat that accumulates in muscle cells causes insulin resistance.
2. Increase in animal product consumption
Diabetes is a hormonal problem and animal products also contain hormones which upset the hormonal balance in our own body. This can be a major cause of diabetes.
3. Increase in the use of chemicals.
Chemicals are hormone disruptors, and chemicals are almost everywhere – the non-organic foods, the packaged and processed foods, the plastic containers, toothpaste, mouthwash, medicines, soap, shampoos, perfumes, deodorant, hand sanitisers, shaving creams, lotions, detergent, fabric softeners, air fresheners, window cleaners, toilet cleaners… the list is pretty endless.
4. Lack of vitamin D
Not everyone has time to spend in the sunshine, in an unpolluted areas, these days.
5. Stress
Blood sugars increase with stress.
