From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...
|
We have become so accustomed to not questioning our food—whether it’s ready-made restaurant meals ordered in or packaged foods picked up here and there. Convenience has become more important than quality. In many households, home cooking has become a rarity.
We are also the only species that sprays food with poison so that other animals won’t eat it—and then we eat it ourselves. Today, synthetic fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides, growth enhancers, and ripening agents are used on most foods, and these chemicals are toxic to our bodies. Yet we rarely think about it, because everyone else is eating the same thing.
Farmers, however, are often aware. Many grow food separately for their own families—without chemicals. Organic farmers, in particular, choose this path for different reasons. Some do it to care for the land, soil, and future generations. Others turn to organic farming after suffering from disease, seeking to heal themselves and others.
In truth, organically grown food shouldn’t need a label or certification—it’s the natural way to grow food. It’s conventional farming, with its chemical inputs, that should be marked with warnings. Organic food prices are high, not because it’s harder to grow, but because of certification costs and the expense of keeping it separate from conventional produce. The more we buy organic, the more affordable it will become. So, choose organic whenever you can.

Why Choose Organic?
Many people have the same questions when they think about buying organic food. Here are some answers:
1. Isn’t organic expensive?
It can be, but better taste often means fewer cravings for packaged foods and eating out—overall costs can go down.
2. How can I make it affordable?
Grow your own greens, microgreens, and vegetables at home. It’s easier than you think.
3. How do I know it’s real?
Buy from dedicated organic shops or sections. Seasonal availability is a good sign.
4. Nothing is 100% organic!
True—but 80% organic is far better than 100% chemical.
5. Can’t I just wash or peel it?
No—chemicals are absorbed into the plant, just like creams or perfumes sink into our skin.
