From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah...
|
In today’s culture, we are constantly washing ourselves. Most of us shower every day—some even more than once. Each shower involves soap and shampoo, stripping the body of its natural protective layer of oils. To compensate, we slather on lotions and creams. The same cycle applies to our hair: harsh shampoos followed by conditioners. Then, after all that, we apply deodorants because, without them, we smell!
But what if there’s a better way? Imagine cleaning your body from the inside out by eating right, so odour is no longer a concern. What if you only washed when truly needed, using just warm water and a washcloth? Instead of synthetic lotions, you could use edible oils on dry skin, allowing your body to absorb natural nourishment. Picture your skin glowing naturally, eliminating the need for cosmetics altogether.
It’s challenging to think differently when we’re bombarded with advertisements urging us to consume more products. But knowing the facts, would you be willing to give this simpler, more natural approach a try?

'Thanks to you all, for making us aware of what to put in our body'
Mumbai-based 47yrs old artist & educator Pooja Kohli shares how what she put in her body helped her health and skin pigmentation too…
We belong to a vegetarian family which has a history of hypothyroidism and so I always believed that I will also have to take medicines all my life. Getting married and having kids, I got so busy that I totally ignored myself and didn’t realise that over the years I was getting pigmentation on my face, back, dark eye circles and on and off my face swelled up early in the morning. Initially I thought I was allergic to certain things but those were my wrong beliefs. I also got PCOD, and had severe pain before periods.
Then my husband was diagnosed with diabetes. That’s when we started our whole food plant-based journey. Everything started improving. His HbA1c came down to 6.1 and his cholesterol also came in range. My periods got regular, my pain subsided and the best thing that happened to me was that my pigmentation reduced to one third – not only from my face but also from back as well! The swelling on my face, which was a kind of regular feature, just vanished. Within three months, my thyroid levels were also in the range. I think apart from stopping animal products, the green smoothies also played a big role in all this. Having them first thing in the morning increased my energy levels throughout the day. I lost nearly about 12 kgs too.
Now I’ll say I am 90% on SHARAN lifestyle as Bengali sweets are something I fall for at times. I keep attending the SHARAN online and offline sessions and try to unlearn the way I have been brought up and most of all I am happy with myself.
Cosmetics from your Kitchen
Nature has it all….it is us who fail to discover. Read about some simple and easy tricks to add the outward sheen that a good diet can easily bring about! But being creatures of habit, till you reach a state where you will only trust your diet, better to go with these for sure!
- Beets for a blush and lipstick! Simply run a slice of freshly cut beet on the lips or cheeks! Or dab with cold-pressed coconut oil and apply.
- Avocados for an anti-wrinkle treatment. Just mash the flesh right below the avocado’s skin, and apply around the wrinkle-prone area!
- Rose-water is a great skin toner.
- Sea-salt works well to remove the excess oil from your hair and bring in some volume. Just gently rub it into your scalp!
- Fresh aloe-vera gel can help with skin burns.

Natural Beauty
Did you know that the global skincare industry is now worth over USD 150 billion and continues to grow rapidly? This explosive demand is driven largely by younger consumers seeking quick-fix solutions. But here’s a startling fact: studies show that up to 82% of skincare and cosmetic advertising claims are false!
At SHARAN, we advocate for a different approach—one that doesn’t rely on external applications like creams, oils, moisturizers, lotions, or cosmetics. These products often come with hidden toxins and chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin, potentially causing long-term harm.
True skincare begins from within. Your skin is a mirror of your overall health. Instead of turning to expensive products or beauty salons, consider heading to an organic farmers market or store. By nourishing your body with clean, wholesome foods, you’ll achieve radiant, glowing skin naturally—without the risks of harmful chemicals. Health and beauty are truly within your reach!
Read about the foods that will take care of your skin…..
1. Orange-red vegetables
are full of beta-carotene which convert into Vitamin A in our bodies. The Vitamin A acts as an anti-oxidant and prevents cell damage and premature ageing.
2. Green leafy vegetables
provide nutrients which help produce more fresh new cells by getting rid of the old ones. They reduce dryness and keep one’s face looking young and bright.
3. Fruits
all of them share a special place in skin-care because of their phytonutrients!
4. Almonds, pistachios and walnuts
are not only good sources of Omega 3, but especially almonds also have Vitamin E which helps the skin hold in moisture, making it look younger!
5. Water
The simplest way to keep your skin hydrated is through water which makes it look plump and nice.
6. Seeds
Flax seeds are a secret to flawless skin and healthy shiny hair. Sesame seeds are skin protectors. Sunflower seeds keep the skin healthy.
