A compassionate approach to life can help one age gracefully

Armaity Bharucha, Pune

82-year-old Armaity Bharucha from Pune shares how age is no bar to embrace health!

I am blessed with a lot of energy and good health thanks to the change in my lifestyle. I started my vegan journey after reading Dr Nandita Shah’s book – Reversing Diabetes in 21 Days – which my friend gifted me, since I was a diabetic. It was the time Covid was at its peak. I was a total non-vegetarian at the time. However, commitment to health and wellness became a priority for me and I decided to become vegan overnight.

During that period I taught myself to cook plant-based food which meant a big change in the pantry . Within about four months I lost 10 kgs. I felt greatly energised. I learnt to cook delicious oil-free food and great desserts too. I have moved from being a diabetic to a pre-diabetic. I must confess there are times when I have no choice and am compelled by circumstances to eat milk products etc.

I have always loved animals and this diet aligns with my values of compassion and sustainability. Also being with nature, gardening and doing exercise and taking walks keeps me physically fit. I love travelling and interacting with people. I learn languages and play games to keep my mind active. I feel that with a compassionate approach to life one can age gracefully.
