With the current pandemic, raising our immunity is more important NOW than ever before. Covid-19 spreads quickly and there is no way to isolate ourselves totally, even if we take extreme precautions. So why not, instead, seize this opportunity to take complete charge of our health?

Those suffering from lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, chronic kidney disease or lung diseases like asthma and COPD are more likely to suffer from morbidity or even mortality from Covid-19. Certain medications like immunosuppressants and chemotherapy also lower immunity.

But there is good news. Like the name suggests, these are lifestyle diseases and they are the result of our lifestyle. With the pandemic, most of us in urban areas are being forced to make changes in our lifestyle, and this can be positive too. It is possible to reverse these diseases with changes in lifestyle and the pandemic is definitely showing the way forward.

SHARAN’s goal is to build a culture of health and for this we have been conducting various online events since the lockdown started. We began with a Health Week, followed by Saturdays and Sundays weekend events and now we have the Salad Revolution at the end of every month. On 3rd June, my 21-year old son Aditya tested positive for Covid 19

He had been working 12 hour shifts practically every day at office. He was aware of the possibility of exposing himself to the virus, but wanted to support his fellow employees. He would come home for lunch and share stories about everyone being fearful of the pandemic. It was difficult for him to stay in such a negative environment when he was trying to push back the same thoughts.

After a few days, he started feeling hazy and heavily lethargic, and decided to take a break. An avid believer of food being either one’s poison or medicine, I encouraged him to go on a raw food diet and put him on a juice cleanse. Meanwhile, I was feeling anxious and got him tested. He was positive. The anxiety came in waves, but it slowly settled down as I noticed that his symptoms were very mild.

Within four days he started feeling better, and then I tested positive! My symptoms too were mild and lasted less than 4 days. Throughout this experience I was also quite busy at work, but Dr Nandita kept reassuring me that just rest and good food would help pull us through.

And it worked! We took no medicines at all and it was only food that healed us. My faith in a plant-based diet to keep my family and me safe and immune, is stronger than ever!

What destroys immunity?                                                                          

We all know that consuming a healthy diet and exercising will build our defence mechanism to deal with the corona virus and other infectious diseases. However, in spite of doing that, we may still be missing out on other factors that destroy our immunity.

Read this checklist for those factors and get back on track wherever required.

1. Lifestyle diseases

Lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, auto-immune diseases destroy our immunity. The good news is that most can be reversed with diet, so take charge now.

2. Free radicals

Free radicals found in meat, fish, chicken, eggs and dairy which make your body vulnerable to infections and diseases reduce immunity.

3. Acidic foods

Acidic foods such as tea, coffee, colas, sugar, alcohol and animal products, and habits like smoking and drugs.

4. Fear, stress and anger

Most diseases take birth in the mind and manifest in the body if the mental state isn’t taken care of.

5. Lack of fresh air

6.  Non organic foods

Non organic foods and packaged foods which contain a host of chemicals are harmful to the body.

7.  Medications

Medications are chemicals that our bodies have to metabolise and excrete and therefore, an additional load to our liver and kidneys.

8.  Lack of sleep

Exercise, an early dinner and digital detox before bedtime will help in good sleep.

9.  Sadness

Problems are a given, suffering is optional. Invest your time in becoming emotionally strong. 

10.  Eating only cooked food

Raw foods build immunity. If most of your food is cooked then that is a cause for concern.
